Acorn Enterprises, An Overview

We began as an informal collaborative of very local service providers and residents committed to community health.

Our definition of health is very broad! It includes vocational training and community ecomonic development.

As one of the first non-city recipients in the California Healthy Cities and Communities Program, we conducted a year-long assessment and planning process which identified youth activities as the highest priority.

We currently provide the following services:

  • After school activities four days per week during the school year, Summer youth activitites, and teen nights at the Acorn Café.
  • Sponsorship of the Teen Club which meets monthly and organizes community activites.
  • Vocational training for youth and CalWorks participants in the Acorn Café.
  • Sponsorship of the Oak Tree Community Library, located within the youth recreation center, in what was a gas station next to the Café.
  • Emergency food, and nutrition education site.
  • Healthy Families outreach site.
  • A very popular CyberCafé.
  • Host of Fountain Farms and Gardens certified farmers market and monthly meetings. The market is used as an opportunity to provide nutritional information along with all the benefits of an informal community meeting place.
  • Access to natural foods at wholesale costs by coordinating a monthly order to Mountain People's Warehouse.
